Unwinding in Paradise: A Week at Universal's Royal Pacific Resort

We were scheduled to head to Aruba, but due to an engine issue on our ship, Carnival cancelled our cruise. Our bad for booking that particular line, we won't make that mistake again. But, since my husband works for Universal, we got a great rate at Royal Pacific Resort and decided to take a week away there instead. The resort is gorgeous with a great lagoon pool complete with pool-side bar.

Because my husband never gets to sleep in between opening at the park and walking the dog, I slipped out of our room each morning at six-thirty to grab a breakfast sandwich and soda at Tuk Tuk Market and then find a quiet spot to work. Right now, I'm editing the first cozy, Hook, Line, and Stinker. My mornings are also scheduled for podcasts. I'm addicted to:

  • The Rebel Author Podcast

  • The Creative Penn Podcast

  • Rough Drafts Welcome

  • The Sh*t No One Told You About Writing

  • The Sisters in Crime Writers' Podcast

(I also listen to the 365 Message Center Show for work.)

I had a great week starting with a massage at Massage Envy, a couple of days by the pool reading, and a day at Animal Kingdom. We went to see the Lion King show which we hadn't seen in several years. I found that writing is a very sedentary second career on top of IT which is a very sedentary first career - in other words: I need get out away from my desk more.

But, it was a great week of rest, recovery, and reconnection with my husband.

We both got a lot of reading done. He read Murder Your Employer: The McMaster's Guide to Homicide, ironic, since we were at his employer's resort. I read the two most recent Pendergast novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln child: The Cabinet of Dr. Leng and Angel of Vengeance which were a return to the amazing blueprint the duo has had for many years of success.

The poolside bar & grill had great food and even better drinks. I allowed myself one drink per day, and Universal didn't disappoint. From the Strawberry margarita at the pool to the Blackberry margarita at Antojitos, the spirits were expertly balanced and full of flavor.

All in all, I'd definitely recommend the resort, the food, and the ambiance. I'm more at peace than I have been for months, and totally recharged for Sleuthfest coming up in a few weeks!
